Automakers are leaving no stone unturned these days to make a buck or in Audi's case, a Euro or two. The German company is getting ready to enter a new niche segment with the presentation of the A4 Allroad Quattro, a crossover version of its latest A4 Avant that will compete head on with the new Saab 9-3X, and in some ways act as an alternative proposal to compact SUV's like its own Q5 and the BMW X5. Audi will initially offer a gasoline engine and two diesel engines for the A4 Allroad Quattro that will hit European dealerships early this summer at a basic price of €37,100.
The engine range comprises of the 2.0-liter TFSI gasoline unit that delivers 211HP and 350 Nm of torque. Matted to Audi's S-Tronic dual-clutch semi-automatic transmission, it propels the Allroad to 100 km/h (62mph) in 6.9 sec, and to a top speed of 230 km/h (143mph). On average, it consumes 8.1 lt of fuel per 100 km (29 mpg).
The diesel range includes the 4-cylinder 2.0-liter TDI with 170HP that's combined with a six-speed manual gearbox launching the car from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.9 sec and on to a top speed of 213 km/h (132mph) with an avg fuel consumption of 6.4 ly of fuel per 100 km (36.8mpg). The more powerful 3.0-liter TDI V6 delivers 240HP and is hooked up to dual-clutch semi-automatic transmission propelling the Allroad from standstill to 100 km/h 6.4 sec topping out at 236 km/h. On average, the three-liter TDI sips 7.1 lt of fuel per 100 km (33.1mpg).
Aside from the standard quattro all-wheel drive system, Audi's engineers widened the A4 Avant's front and rear tracks by 20mm (0.79-in.) while the body is higher on account of a new chassis with longer springs - though Audi did not say how high. Furthermore, the Allroad is equipped with Audi's Offroad Detection (ORD) technology that senses the type of driving surface and adjusts the ESP's control parameters accordingly. The car sits on 17-inch alloys shod in 225/55 tires.
Similar to the A6 Allroad, Audi's smaller faux-offroader gets color-contrasting body cladding, restyled bumpers, a unique grille and roof rails. Inside changes are limited to the standard electromechanical handbrake and the availability of an exclusive Allroad fabric trim.
The A4 Allroad will make its world debut in Geneva in March. The German firm has yet to disclose its plans for the North American market.
Having unveiled the sedan version of its rebadged previous-gen Audi A4 at the Paris Motor Show last October, SEAT is moving ahead with the presentation of the station-wagon variant of the Exeo that will make its global premiere in Geneva. Called Exeo ST that stands for Sport Tourer, the SEAT-branded A4 Avant will go on sale accros Europe before next summer with an engine range and equipment list that is identical to the for-door model. The only differences will be a longer body, at 4.666 meters in length, and a boot capacity of 442 liters.
The Exeo ST's initial range will include three petrol engines – VW Group's undying 102HP 1.6-liter, a 150HP 1.8-liter turbo and the 200HP 2.0 TSI, and two diesel versions – the 143HP and the 170HP 2.0-liter equipped with the DPF particulate filter and common rail technology. The entire range is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox and complies with the stringent EU5 emissions legislation that becomes effective in 2011. Like the sedan, the Exeo ST is available in three trim levels, Reference, Style and Sport.
The latest version of Audi's twin-clutch S-Tronic transmission which made its debut in the Q5 SUV, and soon after in the latest supercharged S4 Saloon and Avant models is now available in the UK for order on the 2.0-litre TFSI quattro versions of the A4 Sedan / Avant and A5 Coupe. The new S tronic option adds £1,420 to the prices of A4 2.0 TFSI quattro and A5 2.0 TFSI quattro models, taking them to £27,170 OTR and £31,065 respectively.In the A4 2.0 TFSI quattro sedan, the S tronic can power the car to 62mph (100 km/h) from rest in 6.5 seconds (0.1 second improvement over the manual version) reach a top speed of 150mph and return 38.2mpg UK according to the combined cycle test. In the A5 2.0 TFSI quattro S tronic, the sprint to 62mph can be completed 0.3 seconds more quickly than in the manual at 6.2 seconds, and a top speed of 150mph can be reached, while combined economy and CO2 output match the A4 at 38.2mpg UK and 172g/km.
More often than less, automakers try to demonstrate the qualities of a model by using anything other than the car itself. Continuing our pre-show Geneva Salon reports, we have just received word that Audi's booth will host the world premieres of the long-awaited TT RS and the A4 Allroad. Details are still sketchy, but it has been said that the range-topping TT RS will make use of a turbocharged version of Volkswagen's U.S. spec 2.5-litre five-cylinder petrol engine pumping out close to 340HP. Naturally, the TT-RS will be fitted with Audi's quattro all-wheel drive system as well as with the latest version of the firm's S tronic twin-clutch semi-automatic gearbox. The TT RS will be available in both coupe and roadster bodystyles.As for the first-ever A4 Allroad model, it will be based on the latest-generation A4 Avant. To justify its existence in the range, the A4 will feature the same Allroad cues as the larger A6, including a higher road clearance, larger wheels and dark-grey wheelarch extensions and redesigned bumpers. The engine range will of course be sourced from the A4.
