And while the 2013 Range Rover’s looks remain a mystery for now, we do know that it will adopt a new lightweight aluminium chassis using know-how from the group’s Jaguar brand. Furthermore, the new model will feature an alloy body shell while certain components will be made of composite materials.
The latest premium automaker to go global is the Jaguar-Land Rover group, which inaugurated its first Indian factory on Friday. A Land Rover Freelander 2 SUV was the first vehicle to roll out of the assembly plant, which is located just outside Pune in the Maharashtra region of India. The UK Government has offered a grant of up to £27 million ($37.4 million) to help the Jaguar-Land Rover Group develop the production version of the LRX small SUV first shown in Detroit last year. It should be noted that the grant is from a separate scheme to the £2.3bn support package that the UK government is currently negotiating with automakers. Land Rover, which is now owned by India's Tata Motors, said that the Government's grant is an important contribution towards the overall £400 million cost of the LRX project.
"We welcome the Government's support for this project, which would form a key part of our future product plans and which we very much want to put into production," said Phil Popham, Managing Director of Land Rover. The company is due to make a final decision on the go-ahead of the LRX project at its plant in Halewood, on Merseyside, later this year.
The British automaker also revealed that while the LRX concept was shown as a Land Rover, the production version will go on sale wearing a Range Rover badge. The new small SUV is expected to share many components with the Freelander including the SUV's four-wheel drive system.
With the presentation of Jaguar's new AJ-V8 Gen III direct-injection engine on the revamped XF and XK range it is only a matter of time before Land Rover replaces the current 4.2-liter V8 with the new powerplant. A reader of Car Online captured a prototype version of the 2010 Range Rover in the UK and, as confirmed through a registration plate check, the luxury SUV was indeed equipped with the 5.0-liter V8 gasoline unit.
Jaguar's version of the new 5.0-liter V8 is available in both naturally aspirated and supercharged forms delivering 385-hp and 510-hp respectively. According to the British firm, the AJ-V8 Gen III direct-injection engines not only deliver more power and performance than their 4.2-liter V8 predecessor, but they are also more fuel efficient and produce less CO2 emissions.
Aside from the new V8 powerplants, the 2010 model year Range Rover and Range Rover Sport will benefit from a new 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 engine available in 240-hp and 275-hp versions while it is also expected that both SUVs will receive minor styling tweaks.

During its annual Retailer Breakfast Meeting at the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) convention in New Orleans this past weekend, Land Rover announced that it reached a historic milestone with the sale of its 500,000th vehicle in the United States. The landmark model, a Range Rover Sport, was sold by Land Rover Cerritos, a retailer in Southern California. The British firm began retailing vehicles in North America on March 16, 1987 when it imported the Range Rover in the States. The company's first major milestones in the U.S. were achieved in September 1997 and December 2002 with the sale of its 100,000th and 250,000th vehicles."Reaching this milestone demonstrates the strength of the Land Rover brand and is a result of a dedicated and passionate retailer network," said Chris Marchand, Executive Vice President, Marketing and Sales, Land Rover North America. "The Land Rover model line-up has undergone a complete revitalization and reaching this achievement shows the growth we have experienced over the past four years. It took us ten years to sell the first 100,000 vehicles and we have sold the last 100,000 since July of 2006."
